Nancy A. Johnson, M.A., LMHC, Lic. # MH8592

Nancy Johnson is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and founder of Orlando Counseling Specialists.  She received her Bachelor of Science in Health Education from Northern Michigan University in 1979.  Nancy completed her Master of Arts in Counseling from Reformed Theological Seminary in 2003 and is currently finishing up a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Argosy University – Sarasota. Nancy spent 23 years working for a Christian organization with college students, which took her from Michigan to Nebraska, then to Nairobi, Kenya, then to Kansas, and landed in Orlando which has been her home now for 16 years.

Nancy has a lot of experience working with diverse populations on a variety of topics, such as depression, bipolar disorder, along with other mood disorders; oppositional defiant disorder, ADHD, and other childhood disorders; grief, gender & sexual orientation issues, personality disorders and spirituality.

Over the past 5 years, Nancy has specialized in working with children, adolescents, teens and families.  She absolutely loves what she does with family therapy and has found that when working with a troubled teen or adolescent, choosing to work with the entire family has brought about optimal results.  Her protocol for working with young people, which sets her apart from many of the other counselors, is her commitment to never put a wedge between a child and a parent and to incorporate the whole family in therapy.

Nancy works from a Relational Model of counseling holding to her core belief that an individual cannot heal or grow apart from significant and meaningful relationships.  Nancy has a gift of creating a safe place for people to process their pain, as well as being able to bond in a deep and meaningful way with her clients. She also incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy with children and adolescents and counsels families from a Family Systems Model of counseling.

Nancy has three sons, Ryan who is a freshman at UCF, Nathan, who is a senior at Timber Creek High School, and Jason who is an eighth grader at Avalon Middle School.  Nancy considers her boys a blessing; “they are just normal boys who struggle like anyone else.  The joy comes from walking with them on their journey toward adulthood”.  Nancy’s free time is spent watching her son play soccer or another son at swim meets and water polo games. Any other free time that Nancy can squeeze out is spent reading, working on her dissertation, and occasionally enjoying a cup of coffee with a friend.  One of her goals is to play tennis again on a consistent basis and join a bike riding club to meet more people.
